Exceeding Expectations: emedia Reviews Thor

Opening weekend I went to see the Thor movie with fellow emedian Justin and his family, and I felt that I needed to review it.  Now, as a caveat, I have to say that I have been watching the preproduction of Thor since they announced it on Marvel.com almost two years ago, and I am, in fact, a huge Marvelite, and so when a Marvel movie screws up, I know it.

Laura Mulvery and "Inception"

Laura Mulvey, in her article “Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema” argues that the “Male gaze projects its fantasy onto the female figure, which is styled accordingly.  In their traditional exhibitionist role women are simultaneously looked at and displayed, with their appearance coded for strong visual and erotic impact so that they can be said to connote to-be-looked-at-ness.”  This is the core of Mulvey’s argument, which states that men are the bearers of a specific kind of ‘look’ – called the male gaze – which is active, as opposed to the passive female gaze.
