Medicinal Herb Garden
The medicinal herb garden located on the south side of the Hakes Pierstorf building was designed and constructed as a service learning project under the mentorship of Dr. Vicki Motz, Biology and Dr. David Kinder, Pharmacy by Ohio Northern University Students (as part of the medicinal herb course in the spring of 2009).
The spring weather that year was exceptionally cold and wet, which made the construction difficult at best. We succeeded in removing sod, tilling the soil with a rototiller (which at one point wrestled one of the faculty members to the ground along with a student - no one was injured) and amending the soil with composted horse manure.
The garden is used for educational purposes and to raise awareness of herbal medicine as well as being a verdant place for students, faculty and members of the Ada community to stroll or sit and contemplate.
Please feel free to contact either Dr. Kinder or Dr. Motz with any questions you have about this garden, or the other medicinal gardens at ONU.
