Activities

Philanthropy

National: American Red Cross

  • The American Red Cross was established in 1881 and has become one of the most recognizable symbols in the world. This organization became Kappa Psi’s national philanthropy in the spring of 2012. This is a great way for us as future health care professionals to assist an organization that promotes wellness and safety. Chapters, including Gamma Delta, fundraise for this philanthropy throughout the year.

Province: Nutrition

  • Our province works together to support our shared philanthropy of nutrition. It is important to promote nutrition to ensure people are living healthy lifestyles. As future pharmacists, it is our duty to promote healthy living.  This includes eating healthy with a balanced diet and making healthy life choices.  We have done so by volunteering in food banks and holding food drives.

Chapter: Cerebral Palsy

  • As a chapter, we have several activities throughout the year for Cerebral Palsy. As a brotherhood, we assist the Cerebral Palsy bowling league a few times a month by helping them bowl and socialize. We have built strong friendships with the individuals in the league. Every spring, we host Cerebral Palsy Awareness week. This includes tying green awareness ribbons around campus, handing out fact sheets to students, some brothers use a wheelchair for the day to show awareness, and fundraising such as our CP Bake Off. Gamma Delta is very passionate about our philanthropy and each year we hold more events to support it.

Professional Outreach

The Gamma Delta Chapter of Kappa Psi focuses its outreach on the topics of Asthma, COPD, and Smoking Cessation. Brothers update the materials on these topics and educate ONU and the community about the causes, signs and symptoms, treatments, and proper use of inhalers. We present these topics at health fairs and other community events in hopes of educating people on how to prevent or properly treat these disease states and ultimately improve patients’ health outcomes. Kappa Psi has also presented information on Asthma and COPD to children at the yearly Girl Scout Health Fair hosted on the ONU campus. In addition to these topics, we also present information on different disease states at Mac tables during the dining hall lunch hours. Brothers create poster boards and handouts in order to share health information with fellow students. The Gamma Delta Brothers of Kappa Psi have also participated in the Cleveland Walk to End Alzheimer’s and have hosted DKMS Bone Marrow Drives. The Chapter looks forward to incorporating our outreach into our philanthropic events and striving to reach even more patients.

Asthma and COPD as well as Smoking Cessation are the focuses of Kappa Psi Pharmaceutical Fraternity’s outreach projects.  Kappa Psi attends health fairs to educate the community about what Asthma and COPD along with educating the people about smoking cessation as smoking can play a large role in both of the disease states of asthma and COPD.   We also make sure that people are using their inhalers correctly so they can appropriately treat their disease state.  Kappa Psi also has given presentations on our outreach to various centers of the community. We look to spread the word about how serious these disease states are as COPD is the third leading killer in the US.  Educating the community about these disease states gives Kappa Psi an opportunity to reach out and hopefully make a difference in the lives of the people we talk to and educate. In addition to these efforts, Kappa Psi is also involved in Girl Scout outreach programs, where we educate elementary and middle school aged girls about asthma and proper use of inhaler devices. Additionally, we participate in Mac Tables where brothers of Kappa Psi educate ONU students on a new medical topic or disease state every month.
