Selection of School-Based Faculty

All school-based clinical faculty who serve as cooperating teachers for student teaching experiences must meet minimum criteria.  Each teacher must have a minimum of three years teaching experience with at least one year at the current site and grade.  Each must be appropriately licensed for the grade and content area.   Finally, each cooperating teacher must be recommended by the supervisor (typically the principal) to serve in such a capacity (Cooperating Teacher Qualifications Form).

The Field Experience Placement Specialist first contacts the school administration to request the placement.  The principal or representative assures that the minimum requirements have been met and approaches the teacher to discuss the placement.  Once the principal and teacher agree to the placement, the Field Experience Placement Specialist obtains written documentation that the minimum requirements have been met.

Although the minimum requirements cited above are required, most school-based clinical faculty far surpass those criteria.  Many have served in this capacity for Ohio Northern University or neighboring institutions for several years and have assisted with multiple teacher candidates.  Professional relationships between school-based faculty and university faculty have developed through the unit's School Partnership Group, the Teacher Education Advisory Committee, or through individual connections.
