John McCain (Delegate count - 1,325)
John McCain sealed up the GOP nomination on March 4 with convincing wins in Ohio, Texas, Vermont and New Hampshire.
He can now focus his attention on the general election in November. As the democratic campaign begins to turn negative, McCain can sit back and watch as the candidates beat each other down.
Meanwhile, McCain can go to work shoring up his support in the republican party and raising money for the general election.
Pollster.com polls show McCain in tight races with both Obama and Clinton in theoretical November showdowns. The extra time he now has before the general may be what he needs to pull ahead in the contest.
Mike Huckabee (Delegate count - 267)
Mike Huckabee continued until he could no more. A day after John McCain won big in Ohio, Texas, Vermont and New Hampshire, and officially garnered a majority of the delegates, Huckabee suspended his campaign for president.
As party members have questioned John McCain’s conservative credibility, the idea of Huckabee, a more traditional conservative, as Vice President, has began to appeal to republicans.
