Throughout the year, Open Doors provides ways for members to interact and celebrate life on Ohio Northern University's campus.  By providing a community that is accepting of differences, we are creating an organization that can unite students with many different backgrounds and experiences.

Activities include:

  • Annual drag show featuring professional drag queens and student performers to raise money for the AIDS Resource Center in Lima, OH
  • Participation in national Day of Silence to raise awareness of the injustices faced by many GLBTQA people
  • Group activities including movie nights, dinners and discussions
  • Participation in multicultural activities including Harambe Fest, World Student Organization Multicultural Fair, Thanksgiving dinner, Holiday Party etc.

Glad to see you at the student activities yesterday

Just wanted to let you know that it was important for our family to see you at the senior student activities on Saturday. My son will be going to ONU next year and I am glad to see the Open Doors included in the new student activities. Thank you for taking time out of your Saturday Ryan to staff the Open Doors booth. It is appreciated.

hi

i'm a gay alumni (class of 77). i was considering a significant gift to the university, but before i do so, i'd like to know from you folks if the school is being fair to gay and lesbian students, and if there are any policies that you'd like changed. if so, please let me know what they are, and i'll see if i can make my donation based on them making the appropriate changes.

thanks

tom (i'll provide my complete info once i hear back from you. i'm not closeted, but just careful).

Re: Your post

I am also a gay alumni. I have also thought about a gift to the university from my trust. I have had discussion with those in Administration and Devlopment and have made several larger annual contributions and am still considering something larger in the future. I have been able to talk to some faculty and staff and am satisfied that Northern is LGBT friendly for the most part. Feel free to get back to me if you want more specifics.

Current ONU Environment

The tension between homosexual and heterosexual students have gotten a lot better since I have been attending ONU since 2008. We still have incidences of outbursts against ONU LGBT students, but what can you expect when dealing with a primarily ignorant heterosexual campus. We are actually trying to start a LGBT Resource Center to provide better services for the LGBT students, but that requires the school giving us resources they currently dont have. Is it possible to direct some of that gift towards Open Doors to help us start such a center? Please feel free to email me r-finke.1@onu.edu.

Thanks, Ryan

Open Doors President
