Today was a
very exciting day! I had my first fieldwork position as security for the Pepsi
Center Open House. Before the start of the DNC, the party and the convention
committee threw open the doors to the Denver and Colorado public. I and some of
my fellow convention attendees served as volunteers who guided the visitors to
their proper viewing areas. First, Colorado school students attended a program
on the convention and got to do a roll call vote like the delgates will for the
President. Then the public got to come through and view. As security, we got to
go through the Pepsi Center and even on the floor where the delegates will be
in a few days. I cannot really explain what I expected it to be, but it was
more than what I expected. It is fantastic and is really gorgeous. It will be
interesting to see how all of you back home react to it in comparison how I
reacted. Sadly, I can't show you too many pictures of it until the Convention
opens on Monday.

The past
two days we have also done some volunteering for the Democratic National
Convention Committee On-Call Center. Yesterday we put together the media
gift bags for all of the media attending the Convention. Needless to say, they
got some pretty nice swag. In fact we were told that all in all, at least
10,000 bags were prepared. Craziness! Today, we went as a delegation and
unpacked water bottles and attached carabineers to them. They are giveaways for
the volunteers to the On-Call Center. We got some pretty nice swag for our
efforts as well. We got t-shirts, DNC fannypacks, chapstick, lanyards,
stickers, and the aforementioned water bottles. It has been a great experience
knowing that we are helping out the DNCC and I have always loved the feeling I
get following volunteering.

Finally, we
saw the Chairman of the Democratic National Commitee, Howard Dean, speak
tonight. I enjoyed it quite a lot. He spoke about the Obama campaign quite a
bit and the election in general. However, he spent a great deal of time talking
about the importance of the young voters and how we really are changing the
electorate and how typical trends in voters and being debunked by our
generation. He also spoke of how you have to expect to be treated the way you
want to be treated and that you are no longer a cog in the machine but your own
person. I thought that this was an excellent message to send to us.

This
weekend is relatively free for us until the Convention finally gets under way
and the craziness begins. Each day we have seen the city change,
so I expect this weekend to be no different as the delegates arrive in Denver. And, in honor of Howard Dean, YEEAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH! (Full disclosure -the title of this entry was totally stolen from what Dr. A said on the way to the Colorado Convention Center to see Governor Deam.)
