"The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pant-Suits"
Today was an interesting day. We started off by hearing from Congresswoman Jo Ann Davidson and she talked to us about primarily about the job of the Republican Rules Committee as well as the Platform Committee. They are roles that should not be taken lightly because they are what shape the face of the Republican Party for the next four years. That’s something that really stood out in my mind. How she said that a convention is more than just a big party to nominate the candidate but it is the process in which the Republican Party appropriates their platform for the next four year and shows America what their Republican candidate will stand for and fight for. She also talked a lot about women’s role in government, especially in recent years. She provided some great insight by saying that she believes that there are willing and capable women out there, but it is just the process of getting out there and doing it that is stopping so many people. She said that in most cases, women do not step out and run for office unless they are specifically asked to, and she believes that this needs to be changed and I totally agree. I think that to have equal representation is very important!
We then got to hear from Tim Penny and his views on the upcoming election from the vantage point of an Independent. It was neat to hear from him because he was very honest with us about how he felt and what he thinks is going on with our government today. I got to ask him a few questions and that was pretty cool. I asked what he thought about McCain picking Joe Liebermann as a running mate and how that would sit with the Republicans as well as the American populous. He thought that it wouldn’t be a move that would help McCain since he is already seen as a “Maverick” in the Senate; he doesn’t need someone like Liebermann to get things accomplished, although he said that he would like to see that sort of ticket. I personally think that adding Liebermann to the ticket wouldn’t do anything for McCain either. I say this because I think that it would hurt McCain’s base (which isn’t too strong to begin with because of his “Maverick” image) and would hurt him more than help. So I guess we’ll see what happens on Friday what McCain chooses.
So I got interviewed by a local paper today in St. Paul. Once I find the link online I will post it incase you are interested in reading it. That was pretty exciting! We also went on a tour of the Twin Cities as well as the State Capital building and then we went to the Minnesota State Fair. We had a pretty good time there! I ate so much fair food thought that I couldn’t take it anymore! I had a “hotdish on a stick” (which is deep-fried meatballs and tatortots on a stick), fried cheese, a bite of a whole turkey leg, an alligator sausage (YES it was good!), some cookies and an ice cold glass of milk. So really what I’m trying to say is that it was pretty much amazing!
Then we came home and got a bunch of our new friends together in the hotel lobby and watched the DNC and Senator Clinton talk.
My “sound bite of the day” is pretty obvious considering my title. This is something that Hilary Clinton said in her speech tonight that I literally laughed out loud to so I thought it would be appropriate. By the way, her speech was very good and she did a great job getting that convention fired up! I’m not too sure about how well she accomplished her goal of getting all of her supporters behind Obama, but I guess we’ll find out soon enough.
My new language for today, to my own surprise even, is “conservative.” This definition was given to me by Congressman Mickey Edwards today when we were talking about conservatism and his book about conservatism. He said that “conservative means that we conserve the constitution…” and I thought that that was really a great definition of conservatism, especially that of the Reagan conservatives.
Well that’s all for tonight, it’s getting late and I need to get some shut eye.
