Final Post!
My trip home was uneventful almost to the point of being boring, but I'm getting ahead of myself, because I haven't written since last Saturday after my visit to the Hare Krishna temple, which I won't talk anymore about. The reason why is because that the second week of the program is when things start to get crazy. Sunday was uneventful really, except that we (Atlantis and I) had training for EMILY's list. Then we walked around Denver for awhile and saw that it was starting to get crazy. At the orientation they told us that the convention would be like Disney World, but I think the streets of Denver were more like Barnum and Bailey's. The protesters were starting to gather, and the police were out in riot gear. I talked to a police officer at a restaurant we went to, and he said that there was a group called "Recreate 68" that planned on rioting. They had no real objective other than to cause anarchy. I would have felt worried by this, except that as I said before the police where everywhere, and they were in groups of six to eight. Monday was my first day of fieldwork and it was with Lifetime Television. They have a movement called "Every Woman Counts", and we worked an event they were having. There wasn't that much for us to do, so we got to listen to all of the speakers. I won't talk about every single one, but there was one that stood out to me. Congresswoman Delauro of Connecticut has worked on many pieces of legislation for women's rights, including an act about equal wages, and a an act banning drive through mastectomies. Many insurance companies will not cover the hospital stay after a mastectomy, so the women have to go home immediately after surgery. Congresswoman Delauro is working to end all of that. Tuesday was crazy. We helped Lifetime set up the woman's caucus in the morning (this involved putting tambourines on several thousand chairs, and then putting magazines on those chairs). After finishing there, it was off to Emily's list. I got to take tickets and I could see every thing that was going on inside. I saw Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi speak. I got to go in the room for Michelle Obama. It was amazing. Secret Service agents amazing people by the way. After Emily's list, I had another lifetime event, a late party lasting until two in the morning. Wednesday I had a migraine, and stayed in bed for the majority of the day, and Thursday was much of the same. I did get to hear Obama speak on MSNBC, though. I was thoroughly impressed, and I believe that Barack Obama has the potential to do what he says he will. Then yesterday I flew back to Ohio. I didn't get back until really late and then slept in a hotel last night. I would have posted this final entry then, but the wifi wasn't working. I finally got home today. This pretty much concludes my Denver adventures. I would like to thank those faithful read my blog. It's been a great journey!
