About Theta Alpha Phi

Theta Alpha Phi is a National Theatre Honor Society honoring college students who earn a specified high level of quality in theatre study and production. The honor society is active at over 36 selected, accredited colleges and universities in 22 states. Founded in 1919 at Oklahoma A & M College, Theta Alpha Phi is the oldest, nation-wide, educational theatre honors society in the world. Since its founding, it has consistently admitted only the finest colleges and universities with the highest academic standards and the highest theatre standards in the nation.
Ohio Northern University is home to the Ohio Epsilon Chapter of Theta Alpha Phi, advised by Professor Kathe DeVault. At ONU, Theta Alpha Phi is responsible for flower sales before student performances in the Freed Center. Members of Theta Alpha Phi also have the opportunity to be a secret TAPper for new freshman. All new members of the theatre program receive a secret TAPper, whose identity will not be revealed until the end of the school year.

Past Theta Alpha Phi successes include a student directed performance and silent auction to benefit the Broadway Cares: Equity Fights AIDS organization. The entire 2006 main stage production was student directed, designed and performed. Theta Alpha Phi helped to fund and produce the show, which raised over $5,000 for Broadway Cares! In 2005, Theta Alpha Phi helped to fund a student trip to Chicago. The trip gave students a wonderful opportunity to experience the exciting and unique theatre scene of Chicago.

Theta Alpha Phi at Ohio Northern is a friendly student organization dedicated to making theatre the best experience for all students. Members of Theta Alpha Phi also act as a support system to one another by warmly welcoming freshman and new members into the department!

At the end of sophomore year, students who have participated in theatre activities at Ohio Northern are invited to apply for membership in Theta Alpha Phi. Membership is based on a point system, which includes participation in productions and courses in theatre. All students who apply and meet the nationally set required point value receive an invitation to join. Theta Alpha Phi is a completely democratic organization. There is no secrecy, no "blackball," and no chapter or member discrimination on the basis of race, color or creed. New initiates pay a $35 fee to join Theta Alpha Phi. All members are required to pay $20 dues each fall to maintain membership. These fees pay chapter national dues and help to maintain the organization and activities.
